“When Money’s in the Room!” is a one-day workshop designed for funders, community members, voluntary, private, public, and third sector place-based actors interested in addressing complex issues together.

It’s perfect for actual or potential partnership stakeholders with an interest in becoming more aware of how money shapes structural and relational dynamics in cross-sector place-based partnerships

Collaborating across sectors can be challenging, especially when money is involved. Financial dynamics have the power to impact power dynamics, decision-making, and relationships within partnerships. This workshop will help you gain awareness of these dynamics and enhance your ability to consciously navigate them in your place-based partnerships.

Here are some of the pain points we’ll be addressing in the workshop:

  • Risk of misaligned goals: Cross-sector collaborations can involve diverse partners with different priorities, goals, and values. This can lead to conflicts and power imbalances that can affect the efficacy and sustainability of the partnership.
  • Lack of transparency: Financial dynamics can be opaque and difficult to understand, especially when there are different sector meta-cultures at play. This can make it challenging to negotiate equitable contracts and governance structures that promote fairness and long-term goals.
  • Difficulty in creating lasting impact: Place-based partnerships require long-term commitment, resources, and sustained effort to achieve meaningful impact. Financial dynamics can impact the sustainability and resilience of the partnership over time.

Throughout the day, you’ll participate in a range of experiential learning activities, interactive presentations, and collaborative exercises to deepen your understanding of the influence of money on cross-sector collaborations.

Specifically, we will:

  • Explore the hidden influence of money: You’ll collaborate with others to become more aware of how money impacts power dynamics, decision-making, and relationships within partnerships. This will help you gain insights into the financial dynamics at play in your own collaborations.
  • Unravel different money cultures: You’ll learn about the paradigms and values that underpin voluntary, private, public, and third sector partnerships, and how these can influence financial dynamics in place-based collaborations. You’ll participate in a constellation exercise to explore your own sector meta-culture and its impact on financial dynamics.
  • Gain insights about how to build conscious collaboration: You’ll engage in role-playing scenarios to practice open communication and collaborative decision-making in financial matters. This will help you develop the skills needed to negotiate equitable contracts and governance structures that promote transparency, fairness, and long-term goals.
  • Develop a deeper understanding about how to craft equitable contracts and governance structures: You’ll learn best practices for designing contracts and governance structures that promote equity, transparency, and long-term goals. You’ll work in small groups to develop a contract or governance structure for a hypothetical place-based project, incorporating the diverse financial backgrounds and sector meta-cultures of partners involved.
  • Raise your awareness of how you can foster resilient partnerships: You’ll identify strategies for enhancing the sustainability, resilience, and systemic impact of your place-based partnerships. This will help you develop a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play in your collaborations and how to overcome common challenges.
